The transmission or gear warning indicates a possible automatic transmission, transmission-control-module, fluid, sensor, solenoid, or drivetrain fault.

A gear or transmission warning can indicate a fault in the transmission control system or the transmission itself. P0700 commonly signals that the transmission control module has requested the engine computer to turn on the MIL; additional TCM codes are usually needed to identify the cause.

Does P0700 tell me what is wrong with the transmission?
No, and this catches a lot of people out. P0700 only records that the transmission module asked the engine module to switch the light on. The useful codes sit inside the TCM and need a scan tool that reads it.
What is limp mode?
The transmission locks itself into a single gear, usually second or third, to protect its internals. You can still crawl to a workshop, but acceleration is poor and speed is limited.
How is a transmission warning diagnosed?
Both the engine and transmission modules are scanned, and every TCM code is recorded rather than just P0700. Fluid level and condition are checked using the correct procedure for that gearbox, the wiring, connectors, and grounds are inspected, and live temperature and sensor data are compared against the maker specification before any solenoid or hydraulic testing.
